“I’m glad you decided to accept my offer,” Felik said, snapping his wrist to unfurl his measuring string. He had been surprised when Sehru’s new friend had appeared at his shop so quickly after leaving the green, and without Sehru in tow. Had they quarreled? He was ashamed of himself for hoping so. “Most everyone in the village has noticed you by now, so you must pay more attention to your appearance. Conveying authority is often just a matter of the right attire.”

“I have no desire to convey authority,” Mica said with amusement as Felik bustled around him.

“No? Perhaps I should have said influence. Over Sehru, for example.”

“I have a feeling Sehru would be immune to such a superficial ploy.”

“Meaning he is more concerned with your inner character than the cut of your tunic? Perhaps, but never forget that, as his fellow tailor, I know how he thinks.”

“I am quite sure you do,” Mica said.

Felik sighed. “I do hope we can be friends,” he confessed. “I sometimes feel left out when people talk of Sehru’s connection to Lyrion and Gregar. I hardly knew them, though I am aware how much they meant to him. After all, he left the village to be with them.” He struggled to push the note of bitterness from his voice, but he sensed that Mica understood his feelings. “I have no such confidantes here. I keep to myself and tend to the shop.”

Mica raised a brow. “What about Aliq?”

“He would like to be closer than I feel I am to him.”

“And Sehru?” Mica asked carefully. “Do you no longer feel a bond with him?”

“Sehru chose to seek his fortune elsewhere. Once, I found his decision difficult to accept. Now I think it better if he proceeds with his own life.” Felik took his last measurements, put down his measuring string, and scrutinized Mica’s face. It was a handsome face, he could not deny. He understood how Sehru had developed feelings for this man. “Have you ever given love up for the good of another person?”

“Yes,” Mica said without hesitation.

Unsure how to respond, Felik moved over to the table where a length of bright blue fabric lay, spread out and ready to cut. He marked it with a lump of chalk, grateful for the chance to hide his face. “I will try to have your new tunic finished by tomorrow. However, I can make no promises. My apprentices are not yet as sure with the scissors as I would like.”

Mica smiled. “Let me speed up the process for you. It’s the least I can do, really.”

Closing his eyes and assuming a look of extreme concentration, Mica raised his arm and waved his open palm over the expanse of cloth. Without being touched, the heavy scissors rose from the table and began to cut on their own, perfectly following the chalk lines Felik had laid down.

“So you truly are a mage,” he said in wonder. “I admit I did not quite believe Carawog’s story until now.
